Locust Grove Church
2376 N Shelby Co 1300 E Shelby Co Rd, Assumption, IL 62510

Happy Birthday to us!  Locust Grove is 150 years old in 2005!! The building and some faces have changed, but praise the Lord, we’re still telling the old, old story of Jesus and His love. If you do not know our history, read on our humble beginnings on our History Page. We had several projects to commemorate God’s faithfulness to our congregation.

We welcome old and new friends to join us!!!!

Just-A-Stitch in Shelbyville will embroider “Locust Grove Church 1855-2005” for $5.00 on any shirt you bring in, or bring to Linda Cole and she will get them made up for you. Bind us together with cords that cannot be broken.

What’s Cooking? Our own recipe book!! Our potlucks are famous and now you can pass on your favorites. Rhonda Cole and Dawn Adrian on in charge of this project. They should be available before Mother’s Day. As always, our mother-daughter banquet May 6 will be special. Taste and see that the Lord is good!

You will want a commemorative plate with the latest photograph of the church and this year’s mission statement “150 years Serving God and Serving Others”. These will be available in April.

We’ve had great church historians who have kept good records, and we will be adding 10 more years to our church history booklet. It contains names of pastors, superintendents, instrumentalists and memorials over the years. In addition, every visitor will receive a momento of Locust Grove. The refrigerator magnets will be a nice reminder and have important phone numbers at ready access even for members of the church. After all, this is where God and friends come together.

On June 11 we are planning a cemetery walk at Obed, a trip to the past where visitors will experience biographies of many who were active in our church and the community, some dating back to 1855. We believe you will find the stones, epitaphs and personal stories of the presenters will make for a peaceful afternoon celebrating the lives of names you will remember.  Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. Ps 116:15

Sesquecentenniel Sunday will be June 12 when we are planning a special morning worship service, bountiful noon meal and afternoon dedication service. A powerpoint slide show set to music will take us back in time, we will look at where we are today, and special guests will challenge us for the future.  May we be found faithful.

We are now finalizing plans for a mission trip for up to 20 adults and young people to go to Flagstaff Mission to the Navajos in Arizona to teach VBS in mid-June. As a mission-minded church, we have supported this reservation ministry nearly from it’s beginning. The gospel is only good news if people get it in time.

Before Christmas, we will be asking members of the congregation to contribute personal stories to make an advent daily devotional, which could turn into an annual project.

Throughout the year we expect our traditional special services will carry on the celebration of the ministry here at Locust Grove—Sunday School picnic, VBS, and Farmer’s Day.

To God be the Glory, Great things HE hath done!
